About Sanibel Island, Florida

Sanibel is said to have been named after Queen Isabella of Spain, by Ponce de Leon. Most of the island is preserved in their natural state as wildlife refuges and is therefore is a bird watchers heaven. This also makes Sanibel Island ideal and very popular for relaxing vacations away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

For those seeking a more active vacation, there is plenty of local shopping and two golf courses. An assortment of cafés and restaurants line the main street, and one of Sanibel Islands most prominent feature is the 94-foot Sanibel lighthouse that is over 120 years old.

The beaches are beautiful as they are relaxing. Take a stroll down the beach with the waves tickling your toes or build your dream sandcastle. The location and the tides make this spot famous as some of the world's best shelling grounds. So be sure to take enough shovels and pails, and of course a picnic for two, three, or more! Just keep in mind that it is illegal to take live shells.
